The Female Fit Guide
27th April 2022 by Liz King
Having listened to our female customers, in-store and through a specific focus group, we really understand how disheartening and frustrating it can be to wear ill-fitting clothes or clothes that don’t make you feel good. Having the right clothes for the conditions is important, but you shouldn’t have to compromise how you look and feel in the clothing. We understand the struggle of getting the right fit.
Not only stocking hiking gear for women, we provide carefully chosen, modern outfit choices suitable for whatever adventure you throw at them. There is a brand out there that fits every woman’s shape, it’s just finding the one that works for you.
A staple British outdoor brand, Mountain Equipment offer a wealth of clothing options for all outdoor sports. The hiking trousers for women are generally cut to allow for a curvier form, with more space in the hips and legs, with the jackets usually cut with a woman’s shape in mind.
The best waterproof running jacket Mountain Equipment offer for this season is the Firefly Jacket. GORE-TEX Active with a lightweight design, the fit works with your shape and offers good lower-back coverage. Light enough to not hold you back but robust enough to protect you on exposed mountain runs.
The Polartec Switch Pro Hooded Jacket offers a lightweight, highly breathable mid-layer. Nothing unusual when it comes to fit. A flattering feminine cut, shaped to a female form meaning that it won’t be bulky underneath outer layers thrown over the top. The jacket performs well for a number of activities - mountaineering, climbing, and hillwalking.
A classic, timeless walking trouser such as the Comici or Chamois come in short, regular and long leg lengths allowing for more flexibility of fit (Short - 29in/73.5cm. Regular - 31in/79.5cm. Long - 33in/84.5cm). As well as classic walking trousers, Mountain Equipment also make closer fitting softshell trousers (Austra or Sonica tights), giving more of a legging fit without compromising on weather protection. After getting the fit right, it comes down to getting the right features eg. fabric, pocket placement, ankle fitting, belt and colour.
Known for premium, sleek products with unparalleled attention to detail, Arc’teryx offers a wide range of hiking clothes for women that transcends style and function. Catering particularly well to long-legged women, and offering really well-constructed, soft materials. Some women say that it provides a narrow fit across the shoulders compared to the other brands, such as Mountain Equipment and Mammut.
The women’s Beta Jacket is a mid-weight GORE Performance waterproof jacket perfect for rainy summer hill days, or to keep in your bag in case of rain. It provides a roomy fit, rather than a tailored fit, perfect for popping over layers. A great jacket if you prefer a generous fit for your hiking jacket.
A classic insulation piece, the lightweight, synthetic Atom LT Hoody flatters most forms. Cut to a women’s waist, it offers a closer fit to enable it to layer well. This season we stock three colourways.
We stock the Gamma LT pant in short, regular and long leg lengths. Cut to a slimmer fit with generally a slimmer fit around the hips. They cater very well to a taller woman offering an extra inch in their longer leg length trousers, compared to other brands.
Patagonia comes with a bit of a cult following, really targeting women’s walking clothes that will also work down the pub, or even as casual clothing. As a general rule their clothes can often be more of a square fit, and sometimes require sizing up one size.
The classic Torrentshell utilising H2No™ Performance Standard technology is stocked this season in five colour choices. It is cut long at the back, and offers more of a square fit than the Mountain Equipment and Mammut jacket, meaning there is more room around the waist. Style-wise, this jacket looks just as good on the hill as on the street.
In terms of insulation, the R1 Techface Hoody, offers a versatile midlayer suitable for climbing, mountaineering and even biking adventures. Nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to fit, except to note the long fit meaning it won’t easily ride up.
The Point Peak Trail Pants offer a classic hiking pant for women. Fit wise, they run a short (29 inch) and a standard (31 inch) leg-length and a slim fit.
Mammut really design with performance in mind, offering robust clothing pieces for women. They offer a similar fit to Mountain Equipment, tailored to women and roomy for muscly figures.
Similar to the cut of Mountain Equipment, the Crater HS Hooded Jacket felt like a classic women’s fit - cut at the waist with women in mind, and long in the back. The front pockets are placed well for a woman’s shape. Not a lightweight jacket, but the best GORE-TEX waterproof jacket for walking on a rainy Lake District hill day, or even an alpine adventure.
Mammut’s Courmayeur SO trousers offer a very similar fit to Mountain Equipment - form-fitting trousers reducing baggy, unflattering excess fabric but with room for wider hips and muscly legs. We only stock the longer leg lengths.
