Fleece is essentially fluffed-up polyester fibres, designed to trap air close to the body while moving moisture away from the skin/baselayer and drying quickly. There are many different variations along this principal design and many brands offering a host of warmths and weights. We have outlined a few main names that you will see in our range of Women's Fleeces at The Epicentre:
Polartec - Probably the most widely used fleece fabric with several different uses and applications. Polartec produce several different fabrics with different uses, we have listed a few to give you an idea of what is intended for what.
Windshield - Tighter knit fibres are wind and water resistant but still warm and breathable.
Micro Classic - "Standard Fleece", familiar lightweight fleece material. Warm and light.
Power Stretch - Stretchy and very quick to dry. Using elastic fibres makes it great in close fitting active pieces.
Power Dry - Very Similar to Powerstretch with increased wicking capabilities, often found in lighter layers and baselayers.
Thermal Pro - Tighter knit outer, high loft inner traps warm air and keeps it there. Quick drying and durable.
High Loft - The fluffy stuff. Long fibres give a teddy bear like appearance with cuddliness to suit. Makes for highly compressible, incredibly warm performance.
Other than Polartec there are many brands that produce high quality fleece products such as the high-wicking, stretchy and light Pontetorto which is used by Mountain Equipment in their Eclipse series or super-soft but durable Delta as used in their Integrity series.
Patagonia use their own fleece products in their garments, with the R (Regulator) series (number 1-3 denoting increasing warmth, weight and thickness) using grid patterned, stretchy fleece for highly insualting, breathable/wicking performance. Patagonia also use a range called Capilene (1-4 again) which goes from very light baselayer material to lightweight fleece, again utilizing grid patterns. Patagonia are credited with pioneering the use of fleece in outdoor gear, starting out with recycled plastic bottles!
Gridded Fleece - Many brands use a grid pattern in their fleeces, this is not just an aesthetic decision but more to do with increased breathibility, wicking, compressibility, low bulk and low weight. High performance fleeces, designed for very active pursuits such as running, climbing, alpinism or fast and light hiking.
Classic/Micro - The fleece we are all familiar with. Does a great job at keeping us warm, drying quickly and that's about it. Not as packable or as durable as more hi-tech options but often cheap, cheerful and versatile.
Knitted - Often used in heavier weight, lifestyle pieces, the knitted outer looks nice and gives increased protection agianst wind and moisture.
