Oakley started out in California in the 1970's as motorcross handlebar grip being sold out of a garage. In 1980 the founder James Jannard released a pair of sport goggles called the O-Frame using the grippy handlebar rubber (Unobtanium) on the arms. Designed for extreme sports, where protection and optical resolution is paramount, the O-Frames quickly gained a following among bikers and skiers.
Since then, Oakley have gone on to further revolutionise sports eyewear, producing iconic frames and goggles such as the Frogskin and Half Jacket that grace the faces of cyclists, runners, boarders and golfers the world over.
Engineered to the highest standards, the lens technology offers a phenomenally high level of eye protection while still delivering flawless optics.
HDO - High Definition Optics; this means images are not distorted or shifted when viewed through the lens
Polarized - Eliminates glare and reflected light sources to reveal potholes, hidden bumps in the slope and even fish hiding beneath rippled water. Unlike many alternatives, Oakley incorporate the Polarizing element of the lens as a single piece, injected at the moulding stage as opposed to sandwished or glued which can lead to distortion and refraction.
Impact Protection - All Oakley eyewear is subject to rigorous testing (think large metal spikes being dropped on the lenses, ballbearings being fired at high velocity etc) and is only deemed suitable once it has passed their incredibly high standards. So high in fact, Oakley glasses are the only mass-produced eyewear to be certified as suitable for military use. Their wire-framed, fashion range does not quite meet this standard but only due to the deformation of the metallic frames under impact.
Lens tints - Oakley have a range of tints designed to optimize vision in a range of light conditions and environments i.e. Grass (G30 Iridium), Water (Bronze Polarized), Trail (Black Iridium) and Road (Red Iridium Polarized).
Switchlock - Oakley glasses with Switchlock allow you to quickly and easily remove the lenses from the frame and swap for an alternative, adapting your eyewear to changing conditions.
UV Protection - Plutonite, used in all Oakley lenses, blocks 100% of UV. UV rays damage the retina of the eye, even on cloudy or overcast days.
Prizm - Newly released and very exciting, Prizm technology allows for optimum visual clarity by emphasizing certain colours for different environments (i.e. Road, Trail, Golf, Daily). Rather than just blocking light, Prizm allows more of certain wavelengths in, resulting in a much sharper image.
