Boots and shoes are pretty uselsess without the comfort and cushioning of a good sock. Whether you need thin and cool liners and running socks for fast and light endeavours or thick and heavily cushioned mountaineering and trekking socks for extended trips high into the hills, we have a great range of Men's Socks here at The Epicentre to go with your Scarpa, Meindl or Keen boots.

What to look for:

Weight - Even the lightest socks should provide cushioning to key areas of the foot. In addition to the cushioning at the toe and heel, some socks provide more warmth through thicker material in other areas of the foot. The more wool (be it normal, merino or synthetic alternative) in the sock,  the warmer it will be. If the intended us of the sock is for a long duration or in stiff boots i.e. trekking or mountaineering, a thicker sock is usually preferable.

Merino, wool or synthetic - Most of our socks use a blend of fibres to get the best performance; wool (be it common or garden or merino) is very warm for its weight, naturally antibacterial and comfortable but requires a synthetic (usually nylon) frame to be built around, giving shape and durability. By weaving synthetic fibres into the wool, the socks become more durable and quicker drying. Completely synthetic socks are available (usually thinner liner or running socks) but these tend not to feel as soft and are prone to getting smellier quicker (you have been warned!)

One pair or two - Many people wear a liner sock beneath a thicker, warmer sock. This is the traditional system but as weaving and fibre technology has improved, so has the performance of most walking socks. Adding a liner makes for a warmer foot but this is not always desirable as a warmer foot sweats more, the liner sock dampens and wrinkles, damp feet start to rub and blisters soon follow. Having said that, a well fitted pair of liners can provide invaluable warmth in cold conditions. It can also mean you have to change your heavier weight socks less often on extended trips, just carrying a few more pairs of lightweight liners. An extra sock will also take up more room in your boot so always bear this in mind when buying both boots and socks and deciding on size.

Size - All our socks are sized to give the best fit but all have a high degree of stretch, meaning there is a large degree of overlap between sizes.

Care - Wash socks inside out, this will help prevent the loops of wool (which provide bounce and comfort) from flattening down. Dry naturally and don't wring them out as this may cause stretching and deformation of the nylon frame. If you are away for an extended trip, just rinsing and drying your socks in fresh water will prevent them from smelling too bad and they don't take long to dry when tied to the outside of your pack.
