Every good clothing system starts with a quality baselayer. Here at The Epicentre, we have a range of Men's Baselayers to suit every activity. Whether its light and comfortable Merino tees that take you from summit to cafe in style or super-techy synthetics that dry quicker than you can work up a sweat, control your body's temperature and weigh less than a sparrow's... We've got them.
Merino - At The Epicentre we stock a great range of Men's Icebreaker Merino Baselayers, both in store and an extended online range. Merino is naturally antibacterial, quick drying and great at wicking excess moisture away from the skin. Just like when its on the sheep's back, merino regulates your body temperature by insulating and breathing when your activity level demands it. Not only does this fabric perform well, it also feels great against the skin, giving all day comfort in a variety of conditions. Thanks to the nature of merino fibres, bacteria can't get a foothold and so is unable to kick up a stink; making Icebreaker merino the ideal fabric for extended trips with minimal baggage.

Synthetic - At The Epicentre we also stock a great range of Men's Synthetic Baselayers that are ideal for high energy pursuits or those who find natural fibres just don't dry quick enough. Often constructed from polyester, these layers are light, breathable, quick to dry and often cheaper than natural alternatives.
There was a time when synthetics had a tendency to stink after prolonged or repeated use (Smelly Hellys anyone?) but thanks to advances in permanent antibacterial treatments, synthetics can now rival the performance of natural fibres such as Merino. Many brands use Polygeine or similar technologies in their baselayers, this is a permanent, inbuilt addition of silver ions to the fabric. Bacteria hates silver (which is why it is often found in surgical dressings etc) and so aren't tempted to take root on your sweaty t-shirt.
It is important to choose a baselayer that suits your needs, there is a huge variety of fits and styles on the market, check out our Size Guide for more information. As a rule, baselayers work best when worn close to the skin (that doesn't mean they have to be skin tight), so go for a close but comfortable fit that still allows good freedom of movement.
